Presidents Cup Cancelled

The next Presidents Cup will have to wait until 2013. Organizer Jussi Meresmaa said Team Europe had difficulty forming a strong team that could travel to Rock Hill, S.C. this year.

Original plans called for the Cup to be held at the Winthrop Gold Course prior to the USDGC, similar to 2010 when it was held in the U.S. for the first time.

Team USA defeated Team Europe last year 29 to 9 in Nokia, Finland and has won all five competitions, which began in 2007.

The Presidents Cup will return in Nokia, Finland July 17th, 2013, one day prior to the European Open, says Meresmaa.

“Organizers are planning to have this Ryder Cup of Disc Golf every third year to gain its importance. We think the growth of the sport and making Presidents Cup every three years will be key to raise its importance,” said Meresmaa in an email.

USDGC Event Director Jonathan Poole said the Winthrop Gold course will be ready for its next Cup.
“Hosting the Presidents Cup was an honor for Winthrop University, the city of Rock Hill, and for the US Championship. We look forward to its return in years to come,” said Poole.
