Tuesday Gathering Outdoors
USDGC Wednesday Tee Times, the Golden Rake Award, and the presentation of the Champion’s ring all happened outdoors this year.
In a change of scenery, the annual Tuesday evening gathering prior to the first round was held on the Winthrop Gold Course behind the Shack.
Event Director Jonathan Poole’s welcome to the players and staff at the gathering was met with booming fireworks – something that couldn’t have been pulled off indoors at the conference center where the event was held years prior.
After hearing a stirring version of the National Anthem by Jaeson Moore, Poole thanked all of the event’s sponsors and reminded players of the Friday player’s party which will take place at the York County Blues and Jazz Festival.
Accepting his 2012 US Championship ring in front of the event’s past champs, Schusterick thanked all of his friends and family from his home in Tennessee and said everyone attending the USDGC should be in for a good show.
Following the Golden Rake Award presentation, the gathering moved to the player hospitality area for food and music.
Before joining them, Poole led a small group to the lake’s edge at Hole 17 to remember Golden Rake Award winners Sammy Poole, and Bear the disc diving dog, both of whom passed away since the last Championship. The group also took the time to remember others who had lost loved ones.
It was a moving period for USDGC staff and friends, who are still mourning the loss of USDGC favorite, Craig Leyva, who died before last year’s event.
